Bread in one form or another has been with us since the earliest of times. A millstone used for grinding corn was found that is thought to be over 7500 years old.

So the art of the Baker is one of the oldest around.

Since those early days bread has morphed into a variety of different forms.  We have it, sliced, in puddings, as white or brown.  We like Nan bread, Garlic bread and Chapatti.  Specialist breads include, High-fibre, Gluten free, mixed-grain, Lavash, Flat, hearth and Bagel.  And this list goes on and on.  Some of us even prefer to make our own.

We Brits like our bread so much that we consume nearly 12 million loaves per day*  Source - The Federation of Bakers.

We like to treat the staple food of the British diet with respect these days so we can store, cut and serve it up nice and fresh.

Nigella Lawson Bread Bins

Designed by Sebastian Conran, the Nigella Lawson Bread bin is 44cm’s long.  A beach wood lid that doubles as a chopping board.

Available in cream this ceramic bin will suit most kitchen types.

I simply love this Joseph Joseph range of products, which includes the striking bread bin.  Made from Melamine, this high quality bin is hygienic and easy to clean.

It comes in several colours, red, white and black.  Very  stylish.

Chopping Boards

Whilst the two bread bins above say you can use the beach wood lid to slice your bread, their designs are just too nice to spoil.  So here is a run down of what chopping boards are available - perfect for slicing bread on.

Hairy Bikers Chopping Board

Virginia really likes the Hairy Bikers and their Large Chopping board. Simple in its execution, you can see that this beech board is classic, unfussy chopping board.

It measures 38cm in length with the legend “A cut above the rest” burned on the side.

Joseph Joseph Chopping Board

The Joseph Joseph Index Chopping Board is very stylish.  The boards are enclosed in an ABS storage case that has a non-slip base.

The Index feature allows you to quickly recognise which type of food you which to cut.  Would best suit a modern kitchen.

No you wan’t gone back in time 30 years.  The bread basket is alive an well and taking on somewhat of a renaissance.

A good Bread Knife
