Christmas Candles

Christmas is celebrated in many countries and is associated with a lot of customs as well as traditions. Christmas candles have a history of their own dating back to the 16th century.

The History of Christmas candles is linked with the Saturnalia Roman festival. Papers of wax were offered to Saturn (an angel of God), as candles were regarded to be symbolic of the light of Saturn. Though electricity is taken for granted today, we still cherish the candle and Christmas wouldn’t be the same without them.

With the spread of Christianity, candles were placed beside the window front to guide the Christ Child as he wandered from house to house on Christmas Eve. In the Victorian period candles came to be placed on the Christmas tree as it was considered to be the symbol of the Star, which guided the three wise men to the dwelling place of Jesus. Candleholders for Christmas candles first came into use in 1890.
